Summary: Hatake Riku, 14, genin medical student and recent infiltrator (and successful liberator of over a dozen prisoners) of Sound, wants to take the Chuunin Exams in Mist. So soon after the Fourth Mizukage’s highly mysterious disappearance, the Exams are flooded with teams.
Riku’s team may be the only one from Konoha, but they’re not the only familiar faces in the competition. He’ll have to navigate three test phases, figure out what Sound wants with him now, and find a place in a world he’s increasingly unsure has room for someone like him.

Prologue Summary: It turns out, you really can’t keep your job in a chakra-heavy discipline if you…don’t have that much chakra. Who could’ve guessed?
Chapter 1 Summary: Phase 1 of the Chuunin Exams.
This thing was a beast to get out. I second-guessed myself basically every step of the way. I had to restart it twice. I seriously considered just skipping it multiple times. By wordcount, I've written over 100k for this fic, but barely a fraction of that is usable. (I know, I know, no words are wasted. But it FELT like a waste of time, every time I had to stop, shift gears, start over.)
I'm not sure I'll ever be happy with the Chuunin Exams; I think, really, I want them to be clever, and I'm never satisfied with the cleverness of my own writing. (I finally went for 'serviceable,' instead, and that's when I made the characters play Mafia for a chapter.)
I want to set up a couple plot threads for further down the line with this fic, including Riku essentially getting booted from med school. (That he recovers chakra so quickly needed to have plot-relevant drawbacks, and while this one's come up before in terms of him not being able to use high-powered jutsu, I wanted to follow up on that a bit more.) This story will expand on what's happening in Sound, although Riku's a little limited re: what he knows about that. Also, I really wanted to tackle staff fight scenes with Riku, since the next main story will see him using the keyblade in combat. (Any time it starts to feel like Riku's underpowered, please just know that 14-year-old genin!Riku could kick KH3!Riku's ass if they fought with JUST weapons, no jutsu/magic/etc. I'm trying to keep Riku balanced, and that's part of why I DIDN'T give him the Mystical Palms jutsu.)
Karin being an Uzumaki is another plot thread I wanted to tie in early. Her revealing it right now, in this way, has Reasons beyond what Riku's aware of, but it will be A While before we get there (it's part of the Shippuuden plotline). Also, it gives Riku something to focus on that ISN'T his own problems. ...Not that he's avoiding those or anything. :)
Hopefully the fic is worth the wait? I'm super nervous, posting after so long, and after such a rough production process. Fingers crossed the next one's smoother.
